Patients from Abroad
The Practice doctors have a duty to provide free of charge treatment which they consider to be "immediately necessary" or "emergency treatment" to any person within the practice area, regardless of whether that patient is an overseas visitor or registered with the practice.
If treatment is provided free of charge, prescription charges are applicable under the usual rules.
An appointment for an overseas visitor to see a doctor will be made on the understanding that a charge may be payable.
Secondary Care /Hospital Treatment
Patients from overseas who are referred by a doctor to a secondary care provider are liable to be charged by the secondary care provider irrespective of whether the patient has been given free treatment under the NHS.
